Working in the Libraries

What has been your favorite thing about working in the Libraries?: Working with the materials and learning through them and from the patrons that request them. It is safe to say that I learn something new every day and I have had the honors of handling incredibly interesting materials. My favorite items to handle are aged books from centuries ago; they can be so intricate and beautiful.

Can you tell us about a favorite memory or job-related achievement from your time working here?: I have processed well over 80,000+ film negatives for the RGJ Collection within Special Collections and Archives; an achievement that I am quite proud of.

What’s next for you?: I got accepted into a Master of Library and Information Studies program at University College Dublin for Fall 2024. I am looking forward to continuing my career in Library Science, hopefully at a university level so I can pursue a career in helping future library patrons and expanding existing infrastructures.

From Ian, Jolene’s supervisor: Jolene is very adaptable in terms of what we sometimes need her to do. When we have a special project or a very active reading room, she's always able to help out and pull a ton of materials for researchers. Jolene, in the two years she's been here has studiously worked on the Reno Gazette Journal Photographic Collection. She's helped describe thousands of images in the process. She demonstrates attention to detail even on most mundane projects.

Jolene’s chosen book from the Libraries’ collection:

Femina : a new history of the Middle Ages, through the women written out of it
