@One Poster Printing

Poster submission

Process

Posters must be submitted in person at the production desk at the east end of the @One. Our student workers will walk through the following steps with you:

  1. They will work with you to check your images for quality issues.
  2. Calculate the total printing size. Note: Images must be sized before submission, @One staff will not resize images.
  3. Help you select a substrate that meets your needs.
  4. Go over any extra finishing options (mounting/laminating/grommeting) that you might need.
  5. Finalize the order and take payment. Payment is required at the time of order submission.

File types

We accept a variety of file types but we strongly suggest you choose one of the following:

  • PNG - A lossless format suitable for line drawings, text, and images. Nearly all applications allow exporting to PNG, including PowerPoint, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • PDF - PDFs are acceptable, but our printing software has exhibited issues with some PDFs, including those that come from PowerPoint or include nonstandard embedded fonts.
  • JPEG - JPEGs are OK for photographs, but due to how they compress images, they are not recommended for posters containing text.
  • Other formats may be taken, but please check with the @One in advance.

Design tips, templates, and examples

A good poster...

  • Summarizes your work.
  • Conveys a message visually.
  • Is readable from about four feet away.
  • Has a clearly discernible organization.

Poster design tips

  • Avoid text that is too small (18-24 pt minimum).
  • Use no more than 2-3 font styles in all, and choose fonts that are easy to read.
  • Avoid too much text (no more than 800 words max).
  • Use columns, sections, headings, and blocks of text to organize your content.
  • Choose a title that illustrates what your poster is about. Your title should be at least twice the size of your regular text.
  • Choose colors carefully and pay attention to contrast. If in doubt, dark print on light background is best.
  • Selectively incorporate charts, graphs, photographs, and other graphics that support the theme of your poster.
  • Avoid fuzzy images; make sure all graphics are high-resolution and easily visible.
  • Include your name on your poster and the University logo.
  • Edit your poster carefully before the final print-out.

Recommendation for best color output

For those particularly concerned with exactness of color output, it is important to submit a color-managed file.

To embed a working space in Photoshop or Illustrator:

  1. Open the file.
  2. Click: Edit » Assign Profile.
  3. Choose the appropriate working  color management profile for the color space of your file.
    • For RGB files, use "sRGB IEC61966-2.1"
    • For CMYK files, use "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2"

We do not recommend switching color spaces.

Please note, that if the file was not color-managed from the beginning of its creation, or if it was created by an application that does not manage color (such as any Microsoft Office software, like PowerPoint or Publisher) then there is no consistently applicable workflow that can ensure color accuracy, and file-to-print results will be unpredictable.

Policies

Clientele

The primary clientele of the @One poster printing service is University of Nevada Reno students, faculty, and staff printing one-off posters for scholarly activities such as homework assignments, professional conference poster sessions, and college or department show-and-tell presentations. An important but secondary clientele are departments, colleges, and university organizations requesting University Related print jobs.

Guidelines

To assure that we meet the needs of our primary clientele in a timely manner the following guidelines are established:

  1. @One printing services are restricted to those with an active University of Nevada Reno NetID account and are not to be used for materials intended for commercial purposes.

  2. Academic orders will be filled within 24 business hours following payment and receipt of the poster print file; Click here to see the Print Production Desk’s current hours.

  3. While all orders will be completed as expediently as possible, the @One prioritizes academic poster printing. Posters for non-academic use may be moved back in the queue or limited altogether based on current campus needs. As such, non-academic requests are strongly encouraged to be submitted well in advance of the date they are actually needed.

  4. It is the customer’s responsibility to check their poster for errors and to ensure that their file(s) are saved at the size they would like printed. Refunds or reprints will not be granted for inherent issues with the file(s) at time of submission.

  5. Printed images will appear darker than they do on a computer screen and not all on-screen colors are possible to replicate via print. If color and/or brightness is important to you, image files should be adjusted to compensate for this prior to submission. Please ask an @One team member if you need help with this. Refunds or reprints will not be granted based on color gamut or brightness issues.

  6. Posters are cut by hand, so cuts may not be as precise as with a laser-cutter. Refunds or reprints will not be granted based on imprecise cutting issues.

  7. The @One has limited storage space, so any orders that have not been claimed within 1 month of completion may be recycled or thrown away, with no refund or reprint given.

  8. In observance of copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code), I hereby declare that I am authorized to use the content in the file(s) which I am submitting for printing and that the use of the content will not infringe upon any third-party’s copyright, patent, or trademark. I hereby grant a non-exclusive license to the University of Nevada and its agents to reproduce these images and return them to me. I agree to pay the charges for the processing and printing of these images and to indemnify and hold harmless the University of Nevada and its agents from any and all liability, damages, and expenses (including reasonable actual attorney's fees) that may incur as a result of processing or printing these images.
