Citation managers allow you to easily gather and organize citations, store and take notes in article PDFs, and cite sources in your paper in a style of your choice. We provide consultations and trainings in how to use the free Zotero citation manager.
Copyright consists of the legal rights that accompany the use of original and creative material. We offer support on copyright and fair use issues related to research, publishing, teaching, and related areas. We can help you check journal copyright policies for theses and dissertations, investigate your rights as an author, find and use Creative Commons materials, and advise on fair use in the classroom and research.
Geographic information systems allow you to analyze geographic patterns, relationships, and situations for a class, research, or thesis/dissertation. We can discuss options for your research, schedule a workshop for your class, or provide one-on-one assistance with using GIS tools. You can also visit the Data and GIS Depot in the basement of the DeLaMare Science and Engineering Library for software and assistance.
Open access publishing is a movement that seeks to make scientific knowledge available to anyone online, and not just those whose institutions can afford a subscription to expensive scholarly journals. We can help you identify and review open access journals for publication, find open repositories for your own work, consult on running an open access journal, and help you comply with funder mandates for sharing research.
Open educational resources (OER) are any materials used in the classroom to help students learn that have been made freely available online and licensed for others to reuse. We assist faculty to find and use OER and provide support for those who would like to create, curate, and/or edit open textbooks and other educational materials for free through Open Wolf Books on the Pressbooks platform. In addition, we administer a grant to assist faculty with integrating OER into their classes.
ORCID was created to help distinguish individual authors, especially those with common names and initials, by creating a unique identifier that can then be associated with a specific author. Increasing numbers of journals and grant funders are also using ORCID to help reduce administrative burden by allowing researchers to autopopulate required forms through their ORCID record.
The USPTO designated the University of Nevada, Reno Libraries as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) in 1983 to stimulate patent development, economic development, and technology transfer within Northern Nevada. We provide complementary consultations and workshops in patent and trademark searching and company research, and can direct you to information and resources related to the application process.
Research data services include support for good data management practices. We offer personalized advice, consultations, and trainings for individuals and groups across campus, as well as a weekly “StatsChat” gathering to discuss quantitative research questions. We can also review data management plans for grant proposals and advise about uploading your data to Dryad.
The impact of research can be measured and demonstrated in a variety of ways. We offer consultations and workshops on understanding and using various research metrics, such as Journal Citation reports, h index, and altmetrics, as well as using different measurement tools.
ScholarWolf is UNR’s open repository for scholarship generated by the campus community. We can answer your questions about submitting your work to ScholarWolf to help extend the reach of your scholarship.
Access some of our free, self-paced courses to learn more about issues and practices related to research and scholarly publishing, including copyright, open educational resources, literature reviews, systematic reviews (i.e., evidence syntheses), and ORCID.
We consult with researchers and teams conducting evidence synthesis projects, such as systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and meta-analyses. We offer different levels of service, depending upon your needs, ranging from single consultations to more in-depth guidance on search strategy development, software tools for organizing and screening, and protocol registration.
