Working in the Libraries
What has been your favorite thing about working in the Libraries?: Personally, my favorite part has been working with patrons. When someone comes in with an idea and I help bring that idea into reality, it is an amazing feeling seeing how proud the patron is of what they have accomplished.
Can you tell us about a favorite memory or job-related achievement from your time working here?: One of my fondest memories is from my second week of training, during my first unsupervised consultation. All the full-time staff were in meetings, leaving just me and two coworkers on duty. A patron came in wanting to use the Dremel laser cutter to make stencils for an electronics project. I was the only one in my group who had completed the laser training, so I stepped in to help. To my surprise, the project was a solar-powered autonomous aircraft designed to land and take off from a lake, scan the terrain at night, and recharge during the day. I had the privilege of watching it evolve over the years. Recently, the patron returned to show us the finished model and a video of its operation. It was a special moment that reminded me how meaningful that first consultation was.
What’s next for you?: I'm not quite sure what my future holds. My initial plan is to work as a software engineer here in Reno at least for some time. One of my interests is game development so I may go that route in the future. I would also like to start up my own computer repair business.
From Nick, Nathan's supervisor: What I enjoyed most about working with Nathan was his boundless creativity and enthusiasm for hands-on projects. He was always exploring new ideas, from building Tesla coils to crafting glass xylophones, and he brought that same creative mindset to the Makerspace. His passion for making and problem-solving not only enriched the space but also inspired others to experiment and learn.
Nate showed a real dedication to making competing in the 2024 Innevation Center's 48 hour Makerthon, his team took third place with C.U.B.S: a cleansing utility boxes & storage for a discreet solution to hygiene for homeless or struggling youth.
