The Libraries aims to build a workplace environment that values risk-taking, collaboration, and continuous learning, resulting in an empowered workforce that is more fulfilled and better equipped to meet the evolving needs of library users and stakeholders. We commit to the success and well-being of all our employees by fostering open communication, accountability, and support networks.
Cultivate an inspiring workplace culture
Today, we are all Rebels
In response to the senseless tragedy that struck our colleagues in higher education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in December 2023, the University Libraries expressed support and sympathy for those lives lost and everyone injured, as well as extended encouragement as the UNLV campus worked to heal.
A poster-style greeting card was signed by Libraries faculty, staff and student assistants and was sent to the team at the UNLV University Libraries along with a few small tokens of affection such as custom-made, red wolves created by the DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library. Custom silver and blue Chocorock candy and custom die-cut stickers were also sent to help lift spirits.
Wolf Stairs / VR Timeline for 150th Celebrations
The @One, Special Collections and University Archives, Building Operations, and Libraries’ Marketing teams worked together to create two show-stopping centerpieces to help enrich the user experience while visiting the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center (MIKC) over the duration of the University’s Sesquicentennial Celebration.
The first: two sets of 2-D stair riser art for the main stairs located inside the MIKC Atrium. The first set of stairs featured a wolf image, the second was a step-and-repeat design with a custom logo. The second: a fully interactive University timeline installed on the second floor of the MIKC featuring unique technology and state-of-the-art design.
Both pieces were ‘outside the typical wheelhouse’ of the departments involved and required not only communication and collaboration across departments, but also continuous research, learning, and experimentation in new areas in order to make these projects succeed.
Outreach
SEC open house tabling
The Libraries’ table was a popular stop at the November 2023 Staff Employee Council Open House. The event theme was 150 years of the University, Inspiring Excellence Since 1874 and attendees were invited to “spin-to-win” the Libraries’ prize wheel for prizes such as custom 150th-themed buttons and other Libraries’ branded items while learning about the facilities, services and resources available to University staff for their personal or professional needs.
Celebrating the Libraries’ graduating students
The Outreach Committee coordinated May and December recognition of the Libraries Graduating Student Workers. Now a Libraries tradition, celebrating this key group of colleagues has become a meaningful contribution to staff culture and emphasizes the important role students play in the Libraries workforce.
DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library
Stats Chats
The DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library’s Data Services “StatsChats” provided a comfortable and supportive forum for interdisciplinary professionals to network and collaborate. Through regular interactions, participants have been exposed to diverse opinions, research styles and multiple backgrounds.
Meeting of the Map Minds get-together
The DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library map team presented to the Metadata, Cataloging & One-Time Acquisitions team about the Map Library’s processes and procedures and the great work that has been completed so far. This gathering was to bring both teams together to converse and align the workflow processes. The meeting improved collaboration and communication between the two teams.
Make and Mingle
2023 DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library: Make and Mingle event resulted in the cultivation of new relationships, resulting in additional library sessions taught in new classes across multiple disciplines, including nursing and marketing courses.
Greening the Exhibits
With the generous support of a donor, Special Collections and University Archives has purchased two environmental monitoring devices that will enable us to track light, UV, humidity, and temperature in our gallery spaces.
The monitors will help us cut down on the number of replicas needed for each exhibit, thus reducing our use of nonrecyclable materials.
Sustainable Shelves
The new Sustainable Shelves initiative saved nearly 4,000 donated items from the landfill, with 1,210 books generating resale credit and the remainders responsibly recycled at pulp mills.
