Dean's welcome
This past year was a successful one for the University libraries. This annual report highlights the accomplishments and activities of the Libraries' faculty and staff.
- Documenting and celebrating the University's Sesquicentennial: The Libraries played a lead role in the University's Sesquicentennial celebration. We created numerous exhibits, supported Silver & Blue magazine, provided content for the University's 150th website and documented even more University history. The Sesquicentennial ended with a community celebration in the Mathewson-lGT Knowledge Center attended by almost 1,000 people, including many members of the Reno community. In this report, we look back at the incredible year-long celebration.
- Collaborating across campus: The Libraries is a strong partner across the University, supporting student success, research, and innovation.
- We have extended and refined support for dual enrollment courses (high school students who enroll in University courses) and the Collegiate Academy. One of our librarians received a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the State of Nevada to train high school librarians and media specialists who support dual enrollment students in all locations, including Clark County.
- The Libraries' Data Services Coordinator collaborated with the Writing and Speaking Center, the Graduate Student Association, and the Graduate School to offer the first dissertation writing workshop, a three-day event that took place at the Lake Tahoe campus. It brought together 21 doctoral students from diverse disciplines and included workshops on numerous topics.
- Along with the Jon Bilbao Basque Library, the @One Digital Media Technology team continued to digitize tree carvings throughout our region. The Basque Librarian presented the project at two international conferences and received grants to support project development. This is an example of the Libraries not just supporting but participating in research and preserving our cultural history.
- Advancing the University's Land Grant Mission: The University has the distinction of being Nevada's original land grant institution. This designation brings with it the expectation that the University improve the lives of citizens. The Libraries meets that expectation in a variety of ways.
- The Libraries is home to the region's federally designated Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC), which provides patent and trademark support to both University and community patrons who have questions about intellectual property.
- In partnership with the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies (CASAT) and the Nevada Opioid Center of Excellence at the School of Public Health, the Libraries volunteered to be a distribution point for Naloxone. It treats narcotic overdoses in emergency situations.
- The Libraries regularly partner with cultural heritage organizations and museums to preserve Nevada's creative and cultural treasures. This past year, the Libraries partnered with the Nevada Museum of Art to capture 360-degree video of Seven Magic Mountains, a temporary art installation located in Southern Nevada.
You can find more information about the Libraries' engaged, creative, and hardworking faculty and staff in this report. We appreciate your support and interest in our efforts.
Sincerely,
Catherine Cardwell
