Our selection

The rare books collection at the Basque Library includes roughly a thousand works dating back to the 17th century. For this public domain day, we focused on travel books and materials in Euskara, the Basque language, from the 19th and early 20th centuries. This sample of images is representative of the illustrations and letter types used in those works of the time. There are rare colored landscapes and title pages printed in red and blue fonts. There are early black-and-white photographs capturing the daily lives and activities of Basque men, women, and children. There are detailed sketches drawn by explorers and vacationers. There are beautifully organized pages of instruction on the Basque language, and wonderful sheets of Basque popular music. And elegant title pages and woodcuts galore! Please enjoy and be sure to share your creations with us and the world!
