Making

Making is an integral process in the DeLaMare Library, helping researchers and students explore ideas and learn new insights. Below we’ve provided educational links for some of the equipment we have in our space as others look for ways to engage with their own making equipment and resources.

The London Science Museum (London, England)

The London Science Museum holds a collection of over 300,000 items, including famous items like Stephenson’s Rocket, Puffing Billy (the oldest surviving steam locomotive), the first jet engine, some of the earliest remaining steam engines, and documentation of the first typewriter.

Museo Galileo (Florence, Italy)

The museum has a collection of over 5,000 ancient scientific instruments dating back to the 13th century, and among its most notable items is the telescope Galileo used to discover the satellites of Jupiter. Online visitors can access more than 1,000 permanent exhibition objects through the online catalog

Museum of Flight (Seattle, Washington)

The Museum of Flight is the largest private air and space museum in the world and attracts over 500,000 visitors every year. The museum has more than 150 aircraft in its collection, including the Lockheed Model 10-E Electra (the aircraft Amelia Earhart was piloting when she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean), Boeing 747s, and the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.

The Museum of Natural Sciences of Belgium (Brussels, Belgium)

The museum is dedicated to natural history and is part of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The dinosaur hall of the museum is the world’s largest museum hall completely dedicated to dinosaurs, and its most important pieces are 30 fossilized Iguanodon skeletons, which were discovered in 1878 in Bernissart.

Museum of Science, Boston (Boston, Massachusetts)

The Museum of Science, Boston is a museum and indoor zoo with over 700 interactive exhibits and over 100 animals, many of which have been rescued and rehabilitated. The museum offers a variety of digital content including virtual tours and family STEM activities.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Washington, D.C.)

 Since its inception, NASA has been responsible for historic space missions like the Apollo moon-landing missions, the Skylab space station, and later the space shuttle. Check out their online exhibits about its past and present.

National Air and Space Museum (Washington, D.C.)

The National Air and Space Museum is a center for the history and science of aviation, spaceflight, planetary science, terrestrial geology, and geophysics. It contains the Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia, the Friendship 7 capsule, the Wright brothers’ Wright Flyer airplane, and Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis. The virtual tour offers a 360-degree walk-through of the entire museum.

National Museum of Computing (Bletchley Park, England)

The National Museum of Computing is home to the world’s largest collection of working historic computers dating back to the 1940s, including a rebuilt Mark 2 Colossus computer, alongside an exhibition of the most complex code-cracking activities performed at the Park, all which can be viewed in their virtual tour.
